This reimagined arrangement of the beloved Irish hymn "Be Thou My Vision" weaves together with the original composition by Carly York, "When I'm Broken by Fear." The acoustic recording features piano, flute, and vocals captured at RMV Studios in Stockholm, Sweden—the private recording studio of Benny Andersson from ABBA.
🎵 ABOUT THIS ARRANGEMENT: Carly has loved "Be Thou My Vision" since she first heard it in College. The ancient Irish prayer (Slane melody) speaks of God as our vision, our best thought, our treasure. Carly wanted to answer a deeper question: What happens when that vision grows dim? When fear breaks us and we lose our way? That's why she wrote the chorus "When I'm Broken by Fear." It's God's response to the soul that has been shaken by life's turmoils. In the Scripture, God promises that even when life grows dark and hope grows dim, He is always near. He is the Light that will show us the way. After all, Jesus said in the Gospel of John, "I am the Light of the World". (John 8:12).
Carly's original melody and lyrics follow after each traditional verse of the hymn, making a true "Chorus" section.
Possibly the First Recording
The ancient hymn “O Nata Lux de Lumine” has been used at Lauds on the Feast of the Transfiguration for over 1000 years. Choral arrangements based on this chant were composed by Thomas Tallis and Morten Lauridsen, among others. After extensive research, Carly could not find another recording of the actual chant melody alone.
BONUS CHANT
O Merciful Redeemer
This is a "Gregorian Chant" in the truest sense, because the latin text of this chant is attributed to St. Gregory the Great himself. The chant tune is set to Gregorian Mode 2. The English translation of this text by Benedictine Monks is a perfect sung prayer for the season of Lent. As you listen, the chant invites you to a closer communion with God.
