Six tracks of sacred music, recorded by soprano and composer Dr. Carly York. Three are traditional Gregorian chant sung in Latin. Two are her own compositions. One is a beloved folk hymn. Four of the six were recorded inside the Parish of St. Mary in Colts Neck, New Jersey, where she serves as Principal Cantor.

If you have ever gone looking for a recording of the actual Gregorian chant melody for O Nata Lux de Lumine rather than the Tallis or Lauridsen choral settings, you probably did not find one. That is one of the reasons this album exists.

What is on the CD

1. Be Thou My Vision When I’m Broken by Fear
An original chorus melody and lyric by Carly York, woven into “Slane”, the traditional Irish hymn tune sung to the Old Irish text “Be Thou My Vision.”

2. Veni Creator Spiritus
Veni Creator Spiritus is a ninth-century Latin hymn to the Holy Spirit, traditionally attributed to Rabanus Maurus. The Church sings it at Pentecost, at ordinations and confirmations, at the opening of synods and councils, and at the beginning of a papal conclave. Sung here as Gregorian chant, with English horn and organ.

3. Breathe on Me, Holy Spirit
An original composition by Carly York, setting a text adapted from the prayer to the Holy Spirit attributed to St. Augustine of Hippo. The prayer asks that our thoughts, our work, and our whole lives be made holy.

4. O Nata Lux de Lumine
O Nata Lux de Lumine is a tenth-century Latin hymn for the Feast of the Transfiguration. Most listeners know it through the choral settings by Thomas Tallis and Morten Lauridsen. This recording is the underlying Gregorian chant melody as found in the Liber Hymnarius, and it is believed to be the first commercial recording of that plainchant melody. Carly’s soprano voice is joined by a haunting English horn and organ.

5. In Paradisum
In Paradisum is the antiphon from the Catholic Requiem Mass, sung as the body is carried out of the church at the end of a funeral. The text asks that the angels lead the one who has died into paradise. Sung here as Gregorian chant by solo soprano with piano with unique piano accompaniment by Andrew Macirowski.

6. I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say
The text was written in 1846 by Horatius Bonar, a Scottish minister, and is built on Christ’s invitation in Matthew 11:28 to come to him and find rest. It is sung to “Kingsfold”, an English folk melody that Ralph Vaughan Williams collected and paired with this text.
